Blog Oklahoma Podcast 022: Presidential Election Season

The time is finally here. You’ve been bombarded by the media about it for almost for an entire year now. Well the wait is over. It’s the beginning of the presidential election season.

Welcome to Blog Oklahoma

This Monday, February 1st, is the start of presidential election season. It begins with the first in the nation Iowa Caucuses followed by the New Hampshire primary on February 9th; the first in the south, South Carolina Primary on February 20th; the Nevada Caucuses on February 23; and finally on March 1st the Oklahoma Presidential Preferential Primary.

That’s only a month away. Wow. You know what that means. You’re about to get some mail, an abundance of unsolicited political robocalls, and a few more people knocking on your door. So be sure to dust out that mailbox, put some fresh batteries in your answering machine, and sweep off the porch. It’s going to be a fun month.

But seriously are you registered to vote yet? Even though this is a primary, don’t blow it off. This election is as important as the general election on November 8th. The presidential candidates you select now will likely be the people on the ballot in November.

The last day to register to vote in Oklahoma, so you can vote in the March 1st primary is Friday, February 5th. If you don’t get your registration form in by then, you can’t vote on March 1st. You’ll have to wait for a later election day.

Registering to vote in Oklahoma is actually simple. You can pick up an application form at your local post office, tag agency, library, county election board, and at many other public locations. Or you can download an application form from the Oklahoma State Elections Board’s website at ok.gov/elections. Just remember you need drop it in the mail before Friday, February 5th.

It takes the state and county time to process your registration. When your application is approved, the county election board will mail you a voter identification card. If you don’t get your card before the end of February, be sure to contact your local county election board. They will help you out.

Oklahoma has a closed primary system, meaning only Republicans can vote in the Republican Primary and Democrats can vote in the Democratic primary. Those are the only two recognized parties in Oklahoma at this time. Oh wait except this year, those of you who registered as Independent have been invited to participate in the Democratic primary. So get out there and vote.

We will all know who the respective presidential candidates will be in July. The Republican convention begins on July 18th, and the Democratic convention is right after on July 25th.

This all comes to a head on November 8th for the general election.

So please if you haven’t registered to vote yet. Go do so this week. And please everyone go vote on March 1st. Voting is one of the most important things we can do as a citizen of the great state of Oklahoma and the United States of America.
